Connecting flights

Categories Watches

Breitling’s first connected chronograph, the Exospace B55, turns a smartphone into a complementary life tool via notifications displayed on the multifunction electronic chronograph of the phone’s incoming emails, messages (SMS, WhatsApp), phone calls (with caller’s name or number), and upcoming appointments.

The interdependent relationship between timepiece and phone is reinforced by the functionality which allows the smartphone user to make certain adjustments on the watch, including time-setting, timezones, alarms and display, as well as night mode.

Smartphone connection is via Bluetooth using a proprietary app, compatible with iPhone (4S and later) and Android (4.4 and later).

The wearer can also upload measurement data from chronograph to smartphone – flight times, recorded time with split times, lap times and the like. The Caliber B55 facilitates the recording of “block” times (the elapsed time from leaving the terminal bay until landing at the other end), flight times, and the memorising of departure dates and times, arrival times, takeoff and landing times.

Displays on the ultra-legible liquid crystal screens are controlled by rotating the crown, with activation/deactivation achieved by the two pushers either side.
A backlighting system for the screens is activated by pressing on the crown or, when in the midst of holding the wheel while driving or flying, tilting the wrist at a 35˚ angle to activate the function.

Housing a SuperQuartz movement that is chronometer certified by the COSC and considered 10 times more accurate than a standard quartz, the piece is powered by a rechargeable battery system and also offers seven daily alarms, second timezone function, perpetual calendar with week display, battery change indcator and water resistance to 100m.

The Exospace B55 is proof Breitling has a firm handle not only on its DNA but its audience now and in the future, offering state-of-the-art connectivity based on its expertise in watch manufacture for aviation professionals, and avoiding the confusing bells and whistles many other traditional brands are adding in next-gen models.
