A Stay at Sydney’s Historic Palisade Hotel

Categories Lifestyle

Iconic Sydney pub Palisade Hotel is now a perfect boutique weekend getaway, one of the city’s best cocktail lounges and a heritage public room all in one.

Men’s Style first had a beer at the landmark Palisade Hotel in Sydney’s Millers Point more three decades ago but hadn’t visited since it was transformed via a rumoured $5million makeover into a boutique hotel, with upstairs cocktail lounge, eatery and function spaces, in 2015.

So when the opportunity came up to spend a night in the George Power One-Bedroom King Suite, with its peerless view over the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the working Harbour, there were no second thoughts.

Located adjacent to the major Barangaroo development, the Palisade nevertheless dominates a Sydney CBD neighbourhood which looks almost unchanged from early last century. The Millers Point precinct is a quietish, preserved part of the city and the revival of the Palisade after years of neglect has made the area a must-visit destination once more.

The public bar remains downstairs, renovated by interior designer Sibella Court but retaining the rustic, worker’s pub feel of years past – it’s a quinessentially Sydney place to have a drink and watch the flag flutter on top of the famous bridge. Upstairs there are now eight distinctive, well appointed rooms over two floors which combine traditional furnishings with state-of-the-art fixtures. Each room is named after Palisade’s revered alumni— including “hero of The Rocks” Arnt Anderson, and in our room, ANZAC George Power. Our King Suite opened onto an enclosed balcony with a stone’s throw view of the Bridge (top photo).

Perhaps most remarkable was the makeover’s addition of the two-floor Henry Deane cocktail lounge on the top of the hotel, with 360 degree views of Sydney Harbour. Two years since opening it has become one of the most popular places in Sydney for a drink with a view, wedded to a casual dining menu focused on share plates. Open for lunch and dinner, this is the ideal place to take visitors to Sydney or bring a group of friends to celebrate an occasion or milestone.
