From close to nothing 20 years ago, you can now find a whole raft of establishments dedicated to men’s grooming around the world.
Royal Mansour, Marrakech
The best hammam (Turkish bath) in Morocco, the luxury hotel was commissioned by King Mohammed VI in 2010 as a guest house taking in four acres of lush, leafy gardens dotted with lily ponds and fountains. More than a thousand craftsmen worked on the intricate mosaics and opulent stained glass, and every room has its own fireplace, spa and shaded plunge pool — the epitome of North African extravagance.
Park Hyatt, New York
This was the first five-star hotel to debut in the Big Apple in a decade when it opened in 2014, and it lived up to the anticipation. Spanning 25 floors of the $400 million One57 skyscraper in prestigious midtown Manhattan across the road from Carnegie Hall, the Nalai spa (using the native American word for ‘serenity’) includes six treatment rooms with private outdoor terraces, as well as a 20-metre swimming pool with classical music playing underwater.
Six Senses Laamu, Maldives
There’s no shortage of resorts in the Indian Ocean idyll of the Maldives but Six Senses is something special. The only resort in the Laamu Atoll — a stunning ring of coral reef complemented by dolphins enjoying the still, turquoise water — the spa boasts over-water thatched villas and a luxurious treatment pavilion on the beach that offers Ayurveda medicine, an ancient local therapy that reduces stress and improves wellness.
Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, Switzerland
People have travelled to Bad Ragaz, a scenic town in north-east Switzerland near the border with Austria and Lichtenstein, for centuries to bathe in the natural 36.5 degree thermal springs — and the Grand Resort continues that tradition today. Surrounded by mountains, this spa has a particular emphasis on medicine — their relaxation packages include a basic urology check, mental health sessions, and your own personal health file.
Four Seasons Spa, London
Most spas in London cater to men and women, but the Four Seasons in Park Lane goes the extra mile for blokes with its ‘Hommage’ menu, offering a range of massages, facials, manicures and pedicures designed specifically for men — take the £125 ($200) black diamond facial, which incorporates ground diamond into the facial scrub. The views of Hyde Park from the rooftop spa are not to be missed, either.
