Men’s Style Grooming Editor Elisabeth King speaks with hair stylist Anthony Nader to discover the key ‘dos for the year.
American Crew is channelling Elvis this year. If you don’t fancy slavishly tracking The King, the leading prestige men’s hair brand has other options. Fifties vintage still looks schmick with a short back and sides, a longer top and a razor-sharp parting. Sporty is another strong direction in the lead-up to the Rio Olympics, notably the razor cut on top plus stubble style Ryan Reynolds recently showcased at a White House dinner. A redefined fringe with longer hair all over also looks boyish even if you’re close to 40.
Award-winning hair stylist, Anthony Nader, splits his time between Sydney and New York. Male style icons are still calling the shots when it comes to this year’s men’s hair style trends, he says.
Forever totally cool, it’s not hard to see why Nader puts David Beckham at the top of his list. “I love the way David changes up his hairstyles and the latest quiff he is sporting right now is my fave for many reasons. The secret is keeping the top longer so you can change it up. For added shine and brilliance, you need to use a wax. To change your hair to look more textured, opt for a dry paste.
Jamie Doran (below), the Northern Irish hunk of Fifty Shades of Grey fame, has spurred many copycats says Nader. “When the movie hit the big screens last year, many of my clients came in asking for the Christian Grey cut. The style is meant to appear rugged and undone. It doesn’t take long, just use salt spray all over, shake the hair with your fingers and you’re done. The follow-up movie, Fifty Shades Darker, is currently filming and I am standing by for a resurgence in requests”.
Eddie Redmayne’s choppy hair is totally on-trend for 2016 says Nader. “Thick with a dishevelled texture, it’s not too contrived and there’s a lot of intelligence with the look as well. The secret is texture, rather than having your hair blunt cut”.
