Men’s Style Grooming Editor Elisabeth King provides top tips and products for long haul and overnight travel.
The days of getting by with just a toothbrush, a bar of soap and a razor when you hit the road are over. Whether you’re travelling half way around the world for business or signing up for a weekend break, an intense schedule and lack of sleep can lead to skin and hair problems because of the stress on your immune system. Even Liam Hemsworth would struggle to look at the top of his game afflicted by razor burn, spots and dry or oily skin.
What you don’t need is added weight. Two-in-one products, travel sets and sizes are default choices. Men’s toiletry bags from brands as diverse as Paul Smith and Country Road (davidjones.com.au) are ubiquitous. But one of the smartest options is the Samsonite Travel Accessories Hanging Toiletry Kit ($49.95;bagworld.com.au), which unfolds and hangs off a bathroom door hook, has inner compartments and acts like a travelling medicine cabinet.
Better hotels have toiletries, but apart from a lame razor most are skewed towards women. The Babor Men Travel Set ($90; au.babor.com) is the whole box and dice for short trips – Vitalizing Hair and Body Shampoo, Calming After Shave Fluid, Dynamic Face Moisturiser and Anti-Wrinkle Face and Eye Energizer.
Dipping in and out of water – shower, pool, ocean – plane travel and cold weather sucks natural moisture from the skin. Pack one or all three products from L’Oreal Men Expert’s Hydra Power range, pumped with revitalising French mountain water, to avoid the desertised look – Hydra Power 48HR Moisturiser ($15.95), After-Shave Balm ($11.95) and Face Wash ($13.10; supermarkets and pharmacies).
Travel-related stress triggers spots. As a security measure, stow La Roche-Posay Effaclar Starter Kit ($15.95; pharmacies) containing a medicated face wash and spot-zapping gel.
There’s no need to lug around shampoo with Molton Brown 4-in-1 Sportswash ($24; moltonbrown.com). Scented with cassia and lime, the ultra-shine formula cleanses hair, body and face and also helps soften stubble for a closer shave.
Keep razor burn to a minimum with the updated Schick Hydro 5 ($12.99; supermarkets and pharmacies). Unlike a trad lube strip, its breakthrough Hydrating Gel Reservoir reduces friction by 40 per cent. A good antiperspirant, sunscreen and Bleu de Chanel Refillable Travel Spray ($117 for 3 x20ml; 1300 242 635) and you’re good to go anywhere.
