From our latest issue, the sharpest suiting looks for the upcoming Spring Racing season.
Rhodes & Beckett
Premium quality fabrics and construction are the hallmarks of the Rhodes & Beckett offering in suiting and shirts, making them an essential destination for the man who wants to lift his style game this Spring Racing season. Below are a range of looks for key days of the carnival, from Melbourne Cup to Caulfield Cup, Stakes Day and Oaks Day. And what should be clear is that in a Rhodes & Beckett suit and shirt you are most definitely going to achieve the dapper refinement of a proper race-going gentleman, rather than the shiny lairiness which can creep into some men’s racewear.

Other than the traditional yellow rose, Melbourne Cup Day has over the years become a less traditional event, dress-wise, in the annual Spring Racing calendar. That means it’s time to express yourself, an aim nicely in line with the seasonal offering from Carnival stalwart Dom Bagnato. Setting off your traditionally coloured, classically cut suit with bolder choices in the print and colour of your shirt, tie, pocket square, etc, is a Bagnato specialty, perfectly demonstrated here by this Melbourne Cup Day look.

As we mentioned on the previous page, some chaps mistake flash for fashion when it comes to getting dressed for the races. For the younger man finding his way when it comes to suiting, few brands do contemporary yet classic cool better than Ben Sherman, as these looks for Derby Day and Stakes Day show. Checks against gingham and the addition of some polka dots and a knit tie from the classic British brand will ensure you stand out a little more from the hardened old race-goers with their bookie slips in one hand and a full-strength beer permanently in the other.

The second last day of the Carnival, Oaks Day, is also known as Ladies’ Day and is a chance for the men to get a little more daring with their race attire. Cue Paul Smith, a man with a mastery of print and colour and a long history of selling beautiful suits. Take one fairly conventional and neutral coloured suit, add your pink rose so that you’re properly observing the etiquette of the day, and then make a statement with your shirt, tie, pocket square and other accessories Dotty, two-tone tie? Floral shirt? Larger floralled pouchette? Yes, this should turn the ladies’ heads, gents.
